Center Policies

  • Do not park or stop your vehicle, directly in front of the Center for any reason whatsoever. The entrance and exit need to be kept open at all times. Violators will be ticketed by the local police.
  • The Center phone is for use by the Center staff and for emergency usage only, on behalf of the students. Students will not be allowed to use the center phone to “call their parents, when they are done”! Please stay in the parent lounge if your have a child in the Junior Kumon or Transition Room. Please be available in the parent lounge to pick your student up if you have a child 10 or older, in the mainroom.
  • Please remember that Kumon Centers are not day care Centers and are not staffed as such. Once your student is dismissed, we can not keep an eye on him/her. This is also part of the Notice To Parents form that you have signed as part of enrolling your student in the Kumon Center.
  • We can not assist your child in the restroom, under any circumstances. Please be available in the Parent Lounge.
  • The Center restroom is for the use of the students and staff. While we are not necessarily against the family using the facility, please understand that for student safety reasons, we discourage the use of the center restroom by anyone other than the students and staff. No diaper changes are permitted inside the Center restroom.
  • We do not forbid the students from carrying cell phones. However, parents are advised that most cell phones come with calculators. Especially in the beginning stages of Kumon study, students can be tempted to use the calculator. This defeats the entire purpose of building their core math skills. There are specific policies when cheating is suspected or caught. If you allow your student to carry a cell phone inside the Kumon Classroom, please ensure that they set the phone to QUIET mode and do not use the cell phone for any purpose as long as they are in the classroom.
  • Please step in the Parent Lounge at least once a week, to look at the information posted on the parent Info Board. Also, read the Center’s emails and newsletters. We do our very best to keep you informed about various topics as they impact our students.
  • Copies of your (signed) paper work have been given to you. Please keep these in a safe place. This paperwork lays out Kumon North America and the Center specific guidelines that are important to adhere to. Please ask us if you have questions.
Homework Pickup

All Wed and Wed-P students receive their weekly assignments (Wednesday through the following Tuesday) on Wednesday. Wed students are expected to attend the Wednesday class only. Wed-P students are expected to attend twice weekly but are allowed to miss up to 2 Saturday class, with prior written notice by parents.

All Sat and Sat-P students receive their weekly assignments (Saturday through the following Friday) on Saturday. Sat students are expected to attend the Saturday class only. Sat-P students are expected to attend twice weekly but are allowed to miss up to 2 Wednesday classes, with prior written notice by parents.

These attendance tags are chosen by the family and can be changed. Please let us know, if you need to change your child's attendance days. Frequent changes are discouraged because this can impact lesson planning for your student.

If your student will not be able to make it for their regular Wed class, please email by the previous Monday noon, so that their plan can be adjusted for Pickup. If we receive your email in time, your student’s weekly assignments will be placed in the BLACK Kumon drop box by 3:00 pm on the Wednesday that you student will have received their assignments on.

If your student will not be able to make it for their regular Sat class, please email by previous Thursday noon, so that their plan can be adjusted for Pickup. If we receive your email in time, your student’s weekly assignments will be placed in the BLACK Kumon drop box by 3:00 pm on the Saturday, that you student will have received their assignments on.

Work pickup or adjustments requests can not be processed right away because a plan adjustment needs to be made. We never want to send new concepts as homework. Work pickup requests received less than 24 hours before class, will be honored the next Class day.

No work adjustment requests will be processed while class is in session, to avoid disruption to class. Please exchange your student’s work from the drop box. Student’s completed assignments must be placed in the drop-box at the time of the exchange.

Parents, siblings or students can not walk in the class, exchange the work and walk out without the knowledge of the staff. We never want to send home work that your student may not have seen before. For this reason, all pickups that happen without prior Instructor approval and staff knowledge, will be treated the same as un-excused absence.

Your student’s completed assignments are required to develop or modify their Kumon Study Plan. For this reason, work pickup can only be allowed for 2 consecutive classes, unless other arrangements have been approved by the Center.

For a vacation or absence (more than 10 days), please see the Instructor at least 2 weeks ahead of time.

Homework Completion

If you have a Junior Kumon or a Transition Room Student, please make sure that you date your child’s homework Kumon packets before they do any homework. Students in levels lower than D in Math or Reading, usually have 6 homework packets ever week in each subject, given to them on their Primary Day.

If you have a student in the main class room, please make sure that they date their homework packets, before doing their homework. They do so in class and already know how.

The homework packets are stapled and (usually) assigned in sequence. Look at the top left corner of the packets, to learn the Level, Worksheet Number and the Worksheet Page (a or b). Each Level consists of 200 worksheets and each worksheet consists of Pages a and b. Starting Levels 4A in Math and 2A in Reading, Page a of every worksheet contains the worksheet grade chart, located in the top right hand side. It is required that the student (or the parent) records the start time and end time for each assignment. Spend a few minutes now, familiarizing yourself with your student’s worksheets.

You date the homework packets in the order of increasing sequence, starting the first day AFTER the Kumon class that your student received these homework packets in.

Example: Today is Wednesday, Dec 3rd, 2008. You have a Wed or a Wed-P student. Your student will receive the weekly assignments until the following Tuesday. You will date your child’s packets, starting Thursday, 12/4/08 until Tuesday, 12/9/08, in increasing sequence.

Example: Today is Saturday, Dec 6th, 2008. You have a Sat or Sat-P student. Your student will receive the weekly assignments until the following Friday. You will date your child’s packets, starting Sunday 12/7/08 through Friday, 12/12/08, in increasing sequence of the packets.

Important: If your student misses a day, they need to do the next packet according to the packet sequence, not the original date. In this case, you – the parent - will re-date the packet.

Example: Your child is sick on Monday, 12/8/08 and does not do the homework that day.

On Tuesday, 12/9/08, they should do the packet that they missed on 12/8/08 first. Then, if they can do it,  you can encourage them to complete the packet meant for 12/9/08.

Doubling up frequently on homework or saving the homework and corrections till the night before class, causes your child to make more mistakes, get de-motivated and progress slower.

Initial 69% + Careful Corrections + Some more practice = 96% or better.

It is strongly recommended that students do the assignments daily for 20-25 minutes, to build focus, accuracy, skill and speed. Corrections on a given day’s work, must be completed before attempting the next day’s assignments.
